The ABPS Intra-Departmental Bicycle Patrol Instructor Course is a 16-hour ABPS certified program designed to prepare experienced bicycle patrol officers to conduct department-level training, refresher courses, skills evaluations, and field training for their agency’s bicycle patrol personnel.
This course provides students with the instructional knowledge and practical teaching skills necessary to safely deliver agency-approved bicycle patrol training programs. Emphasis is placed on adult learning principles, instructional techniques, risk management, lesson plan delivery, student evaluation, and officer safety specific to bicycle patrol operations.
Instructor candidates will develop and present classroom and practical training exercises while demonstrating proficiency in bicycle patrol operations and effective instructional methods.
Course Overview
The Bike Patrol Instructor Course provides the instructional, operational, and administrative foundation needed to teach bicycle patrol training at the agency level. Students learn how to plan lessons, present classroom material, demonstrate riding skills, manage practical training areas, evaluate student performance, and maintain a safe learning environment.

Prerequisites
This course is intended for experienced bike patrol officers. Instructor candidates should have prior patrol riding experience and the ability to demonstrate strong bike control, officer safety, and patrol decision-making.
Prerequisites include:
- Successful completion of an approved ABPS Basic Bike Patrol Course
- Minimum of 100 hours of documented Bike patrol experience
- Agency recommendation or approval may be required
Certification and Instructor Authorization
Successful graduates will receive ABPS instructor certification for the applicable Bike patrol training programs approved by American Bike Patrol Services.
Qualified graduates may be authorized to instruct ABPS-approved Basic bike patrol courses to assist in the development, delivery, evaluation, and management of agency bike patrol training programs.
Instructor authorization may be subject to ABPS standards, course requirements, agency approval, instructor performance, and ongoing compliance with ABPS training guidelines.
